Across the country, roughly 12 million of our littlest learners who have not yet entered the K-12 system are at home now because preschools, childcare providers, public Pre-K programs and Head Starts are closed. Families are under an unprecedented level of stress as they face uncertainty, economic hardship, and a lack of social supports.
But there are stories of hope! Over the next few weeks we will feature organizations and businesses doing inspirational work to support our nation’s youngest and most vulnerable learners and their families. A series of short events followed by a one-and-a-half-hour session in coordination with The Campaign for Grade Level Reading, will provide:
insight into some of the great work and stories of adaptation happening across the field, including home visiting, child care, early education, parent support and more
opportunities to support organizations with partnerships and/or resources to accelerate their work
reflections on learnings from this time that will impact the field of early childhood well beyond this crisis
Tinkergarten, a tech-enabled network of leaders that brings families together in a natural environment in their community for classes where children learn through play, has shifted their focus to supporting families at home. With free DIY activities (available in English and Spanish) using common household objects, Tinkergarten at Home enables families to support their children’s continued growth and learning while they are following social distancing guidelines and sheltering in place. They are also supporting a very active, online community made up of families and Tinkergarten leaders across the country and they’re hosting weekly live online classes.
MathTalk strives to inspire adults and children, particularly in economically distressed communities, to embrace and enjoy math everywhere! Since families are at home now, MathTalk saw a need to bring the mathematical learning and engagement they had been doing through their outdoor installations into families homes. By speeding up technology development work, MathTalk has developed content-rich, interactive, AR experiences that allow children to build their math skills at home. This technology is a component of the overall MathTalk strategy which includes: an online platform for families; physical installations in public spaces; hotspots; and AR experiences.
Ready4K leverages the behavioral sciences and consumer technologies to create simple tools for great parenting.
WeeCare is an online child care marketplace helping families find verified home-base childcare, and helping childcare providers manage their businesses.
USC Telehealth delivers an evidence-based parent education and family support model through interactive video conferencing.
